Shetland Pre-school Play (SPP) supports playgroups, toddler groups and under-fives groups and recognises and promotes the importance of play in the overall development of children. All groups provide a variety of play opportunities appropriate to the age and stage of the children involved.

Playgroups usually cater for 2½ - 5 year olds
Toddler groups largely serve the under threes, parents & carers
Under-fives groups operate for the whole pre-school range.

Whilst toddler groups and under-fives groups tend to meet once or twice weekly, playgroups generally offer more sessions. Some playgroups also operate "Rising Fives" sessions of children in their pre-school year. A number of playgroups are registered with HMI to provide commissioned places. This means that they receive government funding so that they can offer free places to 3 and 4 year olds. Groups generally meet in a variety of settings including community and church halls and school premises.
